Through her thoughts, actions and never-say-die attitude to life and the many adversaries that have come her way on account of her decision to live as a transwoman, Kalki has transformed herself into a role model for the transgender community, many of whom still live a marginalised existence on the fringes of society.
Kalki Subramaniam: A Visionary Force in Transgender Rights, Art, Education, and Storytelling
Kalki Subramaniam is a pioneering transgender activist, artist, poet, filmmaker, and educator whose work has transformed the LGBTQI movement in India and inspired global conversations on gender justice. Her activism is not confined to protests or petitions—it pulses through poetry, theatre, film, education, and community empowerment, creating a multidimensional revolution of visibility, dignity, and systemic change.
Kalki’s contribution in bringing change through her activism has been tremendous. In the past 20 years of her activism, Kalki has inspired more than a million students through her lectures across India among young students in colleges and Universities. From Punjab to Tamilnadu, from Gujarat to Assam, she has been invited by almost all top universities in India.
Legal Advocacy: Shaping the Supreme Court Verdict
Kalki played a pivotal role in the lead-up to the 2014 Supreme Court judgment that recognized transgender persons as the “third gender” in India. Through her Sahodari Foundation, she documented lived experiences, trained community journalists, and lobbied for legal recognition. Her advocacy helped build the moral and social momentum that influenced the court’s progressive stance on gender identity and self-determination.
Sahodari Foundation: Empowerment Through Innovation
Founded by Kalki in 2008, the Sahodari Foundation is India’s first trans-led organization dedicated to uplifting less privileged transgender and thirunangai persons. Its impact is profound:
- Over 12,000 transgender beneficiaries supported through education, livelihood, and wellness programs
- 1 million+ students sensitized on gender equality and transgender rights across colleges and universities
- 475+ institutions transformed into inclusive spaces through workshops and training
Key initiatives include:
- Project Kalki: A pioneering community journalism program that trained transgender women to become documentary filmmakers and storytellers

- Trans Entrepreneur Project: Encouraging self-sustainable livelihoods through entrepreneurship
- Youth Mentorship Program: Life-changing workshops for young trans individuals

Theatre: Directing Truth on Stage
Kalki’s solo theatre directions are deeply autobiographical and socially charged:
- Vilai (The Price), directed by Kalki and performed by Prema Natarajan, tells the harrowing story of a transgender woman sold into begging.
- Bommai, co-directed with G Reema, uses the metaphor of a doll to explore abandonment, identity, and resilience.
These plays are not just performances—they are acts of resistance and reclamation.
Film: Breaking Ground with Narthaki
In 2011, Kalki made history as the lead actor in Narthaki, a Tamil-language drama based on real-life transgender experiences. Her portrayal brought authenticity and visibility to transgender narratives, challenging stereotypes and opening doors for representation in mainstream cinema.
Poetry Films: Vadu – The Scar
Kalki adapted six of her powerful poems from Kuri Aruththen into a series of poetic short films titled Vadu. These films—Ongi Kai Thattu, Mahakali – Varam Kodu, Amma, Vithiye Ezhuthinen, Kuri Aruththen, and Eazham—combine visuals, sound, and emotion to bring transgender experiences to life.
Literary Legacy: Writing as Revolution
Kalki’s books are powerful tools of documentation and defiance:
- We Are Not The Others (2021): A ground breaking book on the power of living an authentic life as a transgender woman in a world that is misogynic and devalues trans bodies
- We Will Not Be Erased (2025): A bold collection of essays and poetry confronting hate and celebrating courage
- Oru Thirunangaiyin Diary Kurippu (2024): A Tamil-language blend of poetry, essays, and short stories chronicling real-life experiences
- Kuri Aruththen (2015): Her debut Tamil poetry collection, now part of college curricula, challenges patriarchy and celebrates queer identity
Global Impact and Recognition
Kalki has spoken at international conferences, trained Fortune 500 companies on inclusion, and toured Europe and North America. She was named one of Facebook’s 12 inspiring women and nominated by L’Oréal Paris India as a Woman of Worth. Her work bridges grassroots activism with global advocacy.
